That said, to enable someone usage of that API, you'll have to make them
administrators (maybe just for a single workspace, but honestly I don't think
I've ever used the importer REST API from a single workspace admin).

Hello,
I'm relatively a newbie.
I managed to create a shapefile directory store. However, in order to add
1. Somehow upload the shapefiles to the directory (e.g. using ssh, file
sharing, a third party webapp, etc.).
2. Go to the GeoServer interface and add the layer.
As far as I understand, if I use PostGIS (which I may), again I need to
implement the uploading outside of Geoserver.
Does the GeoServer web interface offer this functionality, so that I can
get rid of the ssh / file sharing / third party webapp / etc.?
I am developing a Django application that among other things shows stuff
on an OpenLayers map. It gets that stuff from geoserver. The layers are
being prepared by a surveying engineer. I want to give this engineer
access to geoserver so that he can upload them. This is why I'm asking.
Thanks!
Antonis
